How to use association labels to define relationships between contacts and companies

Learn how to use custom association labels in HubSpot define different types of 'Company' to 'Contact' relationships

In HubSpot, the traditional 'Contact' to 'Company' relationship is that the contact works for the company. But, there is often a need to track different types of relationships within your CRM. Custom association labels can do just that. They prevent you from having to create a new free text data field which is hard to report on and define the exact relationship between two objects.

For example, you might want to:

  • Associate leads to customer company records if they have been referred to you by that customer
  • Associate partner contacts to a company record (for example, we might associate a HubSpot Customer Success Manager to one of our customer company records
  • Associate colleagues to a company record (e.g. a Senior Account Manager might be the company owner, but the Assistant Account Manager might be an association)

The use cases for this are endless, especially if you start to look at industry verticals. For this example, I used our Education demo portal and created custom labels for 'Referral agent' and 'Referral applicant' which will be applied to contacts (students) to indicate that they were referred by the agent.

Step 1: Creating your custom association label

Click on settings > Data management > Objects > Companies.

You will then need to click on the association tab and from the drop down box select companies to contacts and then click create association label.

Step 1 creating assoication label

Step 2:

Click create association label > pair of labels > fill on the name and hit create.

Step 2

Your custom label is now created and now you will be able to assign this to your students and see them under your agent record.

Step 3:

Next you want to add your students to a referred agent

  • Go onto companies and find your agent
  • Add your contacts  (you can either add new or select an existing contact)

Step 3 add a contact

  • Once you have your contact hit next and you will have an option to add the association label which you have previously created from the drop down. Hit save.
    Select label
Once you have completed these steps you will then be able to see the referred applications you have assigned in the agent company.
